D-day
D-Day was on June 6, 1944. 60,000 Americans and Allied troops arrived on shore and surprised the Germans. This was know as D-Day. The Allied troops came under heavy fire and thousands of soldiers were killed. The Allies eventually took over all five beaches they had landed. By August, Paris had been liberated! In September the Germans were completely out of France.
vj-day
Japan had surrendered on August 14. Japan signed the surrendered documents on September 2, 1945. This day is officially know as VJ-Day, or victory in Japan Day.
ve-day
Germany surrendered to the Allies on May 7, 1945. The next day, May 8, is known as VE-Day or victory in Europe Day. People were happy, they sang and danced in the streets all over Europe and United States.
Iwo jima
One famous WWII battle took place in a small Pacific island named Iwo Jima. This island is important because it was close to Japan. It was a good place for American planes to land there. To protect Iwo Jima, the Japanese had built a net work of traps and underground tunnels.
Hiroshima
On August 6,1945, a airplane, Enola Gay, flew over the Japanese city of Hiroshima and droped it's deadly cargo. The whole war reduced to ashes, like 100,000 people died. Three days later another bomb was droped on Nagaski and caused another 70,000 deaths. On August 15, 1945, for the Japanese government surrendered, World War II has ended for the Allies and Axis.
